Redesigns are one of the most common causes of sudden traffic drops. The new site may look better, but if URLs change without redirects, valuable pages are removed or titles are lost, search engines treat it as a new, unproven website. This checklist keeps the improvement and avoids the drop.
Before you start
- Crawl the current website and export every URL, title, meta description and H1
- Export top landing pages from analytics and top pages and queries from Google Search Console
- List pages with external backlinks
- Record current rankings for priority keywords as a benchmark
- Decide which pages to keep, improve, merge or remove
During the build
- Create a URL map: every old URL matched to the most relevant new URL
- Keep URLs unchanged where there is no strong reason to change them
- Carry over or improve titles, descriptions and headings for ranking pages
- Keep valuable content; rewrite rather than delete
- Block the staging site from search engines with a password
- Test on mobile, check speed and validate structured data
Launch day
- Implement 301 redirects from the URL map and test a sample
- Remove any noindex tags or staging restrictions from the live site
- Check canonical tags point to the live domain
- Submit the new XML sitemap in Search Console
- Test every form and conversion-tracking tag
After launch
- Monitor Search Console coverage and crawl errors daily for two weeks
- Fix any 404 errors with additional redirects
- Compare rankings and traffic with the benchmark weekly
- Keep the redirects in place permanently
Some fluctuation in the first few weeks is normal. Sustained drops usually point to missing redirects or removed content. Our website redesign service follows this process for every project.
